Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed that Donald Glover will play Lando Calrissian in the upcoming, as yet untitled, young Han Solo film as part of Disney’s Star Wars Anthology series.
Glover will star alongside Alden Ehrenreich, who portrays the smuggler made famous by Harrison Ford, in the 2018 spin-off directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Taking place in-between the events of Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of The Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope it will further expand on the period that saw the rise of the Empire, much like Star Wars: Rogue One that comes out this December.
“This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi,” Lucasfilm added in a statement. In September, producers announced a third Star Wars anthology film would arrive in 2020.
Lord and Miller had the following to say about the casting in a statement:
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
And my personal take that nobody asked me for? Well, I’m extremely hyped and happy for this casting news. I’ll admit that I have been wary of revisiting these iconic characters due to the very real possibility of screwing it all royally up and tarnishing the legacy of these larger than life heroes I grew up watching.
I am still skeptical about a young Han Solo film but knowing the talent and charisma of Glover (I’m a huge fan of Community where he played the ever affable and hilarious Troy Barnes) my fears are certainly lessened.
I can’t personally think of a better choice to play the character played so superbly in Star Wars: Episode IV: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi by Billie Dee Williams.
We will have a while to wait to see the actor and rapper that also goes by the name of Childish Gambino on stage don the iconic cape (you know it will happen) with the as of yet untitled Han Solo movie opening in theaters on May 25, 2018. Not to worry though, with Star Wars: Rogue One coming in December and Star Wars: Episode VIII landing in 2017 there will be plenty of adventures in a galaxy far, far away to keep us all entertained.
