Way back towards the end of the Middle Ages, 1578 to be exact, came the fascinating discovery of a network of weaving and winding labyrinthine tombs, lurking deep beneath the street of Rome. These holy tombs were the final resting place to the decayed skeletons of early Christian martyrs – believed not only to be martyrs but to be saints as well, on account of their bravery and unyielding support of Christian doctrine.

Many of these skeletons (given the name ‘The Catacomb Saints’ by those who first discovered them) were then distributed across Europe as replacements for the long list of holy relics which had been smashed, stolen or destroyed during the chaos of the Protestant Reformation.

Once delivered, each skeleton was then clothed and adorned into a variety of precious jewels, expensive cloth, crowns, armour and even given wigs. They were put on display inside many different churches as a reminder to all who came to see them, for the riches and wealth that awaited them post death – providing they swore allegiance to the Christian faith.

It sounds like a tale straight from a Dan Brown novel doesn’t it? Yet it’s all factually accurate.

So fascinated by the discovery and indeed the story behind ‘The Catacomb Saints’ art historian (& self-confessed relic hunter) Paul Koudounaris travelled all over Europe trying to find and document the status of each Saint. Amazingly many of the skeletons were yet to be put on display, still stored in containers waiting to be dressed and revealed to the public.

His book ‘Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures & Spectacular Saints from the Catacombs‘ looks at the gripping origins and history of ‘The Catacomb Saints’, posing such as questions as who were they? How exactly did they die? Who ordered them to be placed in the catacombs? And why had they laid forgotten in Europe’s religious institutions for so long?

His work serves as a compelling documentation of some of the most elaborate & forgotten relics from a by-gone era.

Below are a few photographs from the stunning book itself, which you can purchase right here

How much do you really know about owls?

No matter what you think you know, get ready to learn everything you wanted to know about great horned owls. Yes, welcome to science class — only it’s less boring and more hilarious because Ze Frank is in charge.

In the video, YouTube legend and animal “expert” Ze Frank presents yet another list of horrifying true facts, this time about the owl. His True Facts About Animals videos don’t just tell you all of the interesting things there are to know about each animal, they’re entertaining as well. (His video about hedgehogs had me laughing so hard I cried!)

It seems like it’s been forever since we’ve seen a new video from Ze Frank, but he is finally back to teach us a bunch of weird-but-true facts about the owl. Thankfully, it was worth the wait!

Along with a few choice nuggets of wisdom, he provides one hilarious bit of insight: “Remember, don’t do drugs. Because an owl might just rip your face off.”

It’s pretty much impossible to watch this without doing two things: learning something new and laughing out loud. That makes it a win in my book! Take a minute to unwind and have a laugh — you deserve this.

Enjoy and please SHARE these owls (and especially this narrator) with your Facebook friends!

It’s that time of year again – London’s Natural History Museum is getting ready to announce the winner of its Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, and we can reveal to you, dear readers, some of the extremely talented finalists.

As ever, these awards demonstrate that nature is capable of producing some remarkable biological constructs, from the extremely large to the adorably small. So, from this point on, we’ll let the absolutely breathtaking images do the talking themselves.

Lead image: Bear Hug, by Ashleigh Scully from the USA/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Taken in Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park, this family of brown bears were making their way back from fishing for clams at low tide – but one little cub decided it wanted to try and wrestle its mother to the ground. It didn’t succeed, but it gave it a good shot.

Winter Pause, by Mats Andersson from Sweden/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Snapped near the photographer’s home in Southern Sweden on a cold February morning, this red squirrel was seen to take on this meditative pose for just a moment before continuing its search for food.

Swim Gym, by Laurent Ballesta from France/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

A truly adventurous photographer that has a huge portfolio of shots depicting life beneath Antarctica, this particular shot is clearly one of his best to date. These Weddell Seals are a mother and pup pair, and it’s likely that the pup has only recently been introduced to the ice. Either way, they were unbothered by Ballesta’s presence. “They looked so at ease, where I felt so inappropriate,” he explains.

The Insiders, by Qing Lin from China/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Can you spot the hidden organisms in the picture? Concealed within the mouths of these anemonefish, swimming in the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia, are several parasitic isopods. These sneaky vampires sneak into the mouths of the fish as larvae, via its gills. They then consume the blood from the tongue, causing it to die, before they literally take its place.

Sewage Surfer, by Justin Hofman from the USA/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Seahorses are known to hop from floating object to floating object in order to be carried along with the sea current more effectively. As this shot taken in a reef off Sumbawa Island in Indonesia clearly shows, plenty of those objects are nowadays far from natural.

Glimpse of a Lynx, by Laura Albiac Vilas from Spain/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

The Iberian lynx is an endangered wild cat, one that’s as rare as it is elusive. Capturing one on camera is an incredibly difficult task, but with enough patience, one can manage it, as this photograph clearly demonstrates. This one was spotted in the Sierra de Andujar Natural Park in southern Spain, and as the photographer explains, these lynxes “weren’t scared of people – they simply ignored us.”

Arctic Treasure, by Sergey Gorshkov from Russia/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

This Arctic fox is seen here looking for an appropriate burial spot for its bounty – a goose egg. Taken in the Russian Far East on Wrangel Island, the photographer explains that lemmings are the food of choice for these crafty creatures. However, for a few days, geese from across the world land here to breed, which gives these foxes a second, delicious dietary option.

Bold Eagle, by Laus Nigge from Germany/Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

This photographer spends a lot of time on Amaknak Island in Alaska snapping shots of these incredible birds. He spends so much time there that individual eagles trust him more than others – and this particularly bird got so close that it was practically towering over him.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum, London. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 17, and the exhibition at the Natural History Museum will open to the public on Friday, October 20

NASA has been a household name for Americans since the ’60s when it achieved the seemingly impossible, landing humans on the Moon. Since then, NASA has explored other alien surfaces like, Mars and Saturn’s moon Titan, as well as flown by every planet in our solar system. It has achieved so much on a budget that is so small. Imagine if we gave NASA hundreds of billions of dollars a year like what we give the US military. What more could NASA have achieved over the years?

This is one example where the sky is not the limit — it’s the starting line. Following is a transcript of the video.

The US spends more on space exploration than any other country in the world. A big chunk of this investment goes to NASA, the country’s leading agency for space exploration. But that’s still a pittance compared to the overall US Federal budget. Since NASA landed the first man on the Moon in 1969, its budget has plummeted from 4.5% of the Federal budget to less than 0.5%. But what if NASA’s budget hadn’t shrunk? What if, instead, its funding was comparable to the US military’s?

How close would we be to actually colonizing Mars or visiting another star system?

It’s impossible to know for sure, but here’s a look at how NASA’s budget compared to the US military’s in 2016. Put another way, the military’s budget for 2016 would pay for a crewed mission to Mars with tens of billions to spare. NASA estimates it would cost $450 billion to land the first humans on Mars by the late 2030s or early 2040s. What else might NASA do with $600 billion? Let’s look at how NASA allocated its funds in 2016. That would easily meet current costs for NASA’s biggest ongoing projects including:

• Construction and launch costs for the most powerful rocket in history, the Space Launch System.
• The most powerful space telescope ever built, the James Webb Space Telescope.
• Partner with SpaceX on its first mission to Mars in 2018, the Red Dragon Mission.
• Pay for NASA operations on board the ISS through 2024.

So, how would you have NASA spend the rest?

We can think of some ideas.

Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed that Donald Glover will play Lando Calrissian in the upcoming, as yet untitled, young Han Solo film as part of Disney’s Star Wars Anthology series.

Glover will star alongside Alden Ehrenreich, who portrays the smuggler made famous by Harrison Ford, in the 2018 spin-off directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Taking place in-between the events of  Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of The Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope it will further expand on the period that saw the rise of the Empire, much like Star Wars: Rogue One that comes out this December.

“This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi,” Lucasfilm added in a statement. In September, producers announced a third Star Wars anthology film would arrive in 2020.

Lord and Miller had the following to say about the casting in a statement:

“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

And my personal take that nobody asked me for? Well, I’m extremely hyped and happy for this casting news. I’ll admit that I have been wary of revisiting these iconic characters due to the very real possibility of screwing it all royally up and tarnishing the legacy of these larger than life heroes I grew up watching.

I am still skeptical about a young Han Solo film but knowing the talent and charisma of Glover (I’m a huge fan of Community where he played the ever affable and hilarious Troy Barnes) my fears are certainly lessened.

I can’t personally think of a better choice to play the character played so superbly in Star Wars: Episode IV: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi by Billie Dee Williams.

We will have a while to wait to see the actor and rapper that also goes by the name of Childish Gambino on stage don the iconic cape (you know it will happen) with the as of yet untitled Han Solo movie opening in theaters on May 25, 2018. Not to worry though, with Star Wars: Rogue One coming in December and Star Wars: Episode VIII landing in 2017 there will be plenty of adventures in a galaxy far, far away to keep us all entertained.

Star Wars. The entertainment juggernaut. Since the acquisition by Disney for a reportedly 4.5 billion dollar price tag they have worked hard to create a strong production line for the future of the Star Wars franchise. Smashing records with Star Wars: Force Awakens and now with the anthology films on their way as well Disney is serious about their golden goose.

That’s no different for the games market. Electronic Arts signed a multi-year licensing deal with Lucasfilm (now owned by Disney) in 2013, and they are going full steam ahead to ramp up plenty of new Star Wars games in the near future.

How these will be received is up for debate with many fans wanting many different things and with EA being a rather controversial company and not well liked in the gaming community they will have their work cut out for them to deliver top quality to satisfy the fans.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (better known as E3) of 2016 is upon us. The biggest video game extravaganza on the planet is here and with it tons of juicy trailers and news on the upcoming games we will all eventually be enjoying. One huge title that has been shrouded in mystery and speculation is Mass Effect: Andromeda the next installment in the wildly popular RPG series Mass Effect.

A whole new galaxy awaits for you to explore. Mass Effect: Andromeda pushes the boundaries of known space into the next generation.

Breaking away from Commander Shepard and co to tell an entirely new story this trailer showing off in game footage as well as behind the scenes animation and motion capture work it no doubt looks absolutely stunning. Built on DICE’s Frostbite engine the fidelity and beauty is apparent whilst still keeping that undeniable Mass Effect aesthetic. Slated for an early 2017 release this is one we are super excited to play.

The diminutive green Jedi Master is one of the most powerful characters in the entire Star Wars saga and was instrumental in training Luke to become a Jedi and to also resist the pull of the dark side. But what if the benevolent and wise Yoda had turned to the dark side himself? Chaos would no doubt have ensued with Yoda even possibly defeating the emperor and taking over the entire empire himself and plunging the universe into even more darkness than Darth Sidious and Vader did. He may be small but as we know you shouldn’t judge him by his size and without a doubt Yoda falling to the dark side would have been a disaster. Of course, Yoda stayed in the light but “what if” scenarios are always fun.

Alternative Video Game/Movie/TV series artwork is very popular on the internet with some fantastic artists bringing fresh and unique artistic takes on well known characters. Yoda, super popular as he is, is no exception and the “what if” of Yoda falling to the dark side has been thought of plenty of times before so here is some art from around the web showing what it might look like if the Jedi Master succumbed to the dark side!
