Ghostbusters: New Trailer, New Title and Plenty of Controversy

0

There has been a ton of controversy over Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters starring the all female cast of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. Now with the updated title of Ghostbusters: Answer The Call it’s set for release on July 15th but the backlash isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.

“We have a gift – we see what no one else is willing to see. We do things others can’t do,” McCarthy says. “If there’s a paranormal problem, we’re the ones to answer the call.”

When the first trailer dropped it was met with what can only be described as a massive backlash online. The trailer itself ended up becoming the most disliked video by ratio in Youtube’s history.

What possible reason could there be for this monumental anger and rejection online?

Ghostbusters is of course a highly beloved franchise and many see this latest film as a poorly made cash in on the name; and the first trailer, at least in my opinion, didn’t give many any reason to feel differently.

Then there is the all female cast. In defence of the film director Paul Feig accused those attacking it online of being sexist against the women taking on the lead roles for the film.

I have no doubt that there certainly are many idiot sexists out there that just hate the idea of the girls taking over for this, no doubt at all. I’ve spent more than 5 minutes on the internet. That said I also believe there are plenty of valid reasons to be unhappy with what we are seeing regardless of wether it’s a female or male lead (which of course should not matter.)

Bad effects and stereotypical and outdated humor that looks phoned in from the start is why I didn’t personally care for the first trailer and whilst I do see some improvements in this new trailer my opinion on this being a trainwreck of epic proportions is not budging for now. That said, final judgement will be kept until the full release is seen.

Whatever the case the controversy is not likely to slow down anytime soon what do you think of the new trailer?
