Hot on the heels of the CBS teaser for the new but yet unnamed 2017 Star Trek series, we are now getting the full feature trailer for Star Trek: Beyond, the third in the rebooted Star Trek films.
Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In “Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
Director: Justin Lin
Cast: Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban
When the first teaser trailer for Star Trek: Beyond dropped in December 2015 the immediate backlash was fierce. Many quickly dubbed it “Fast and Furious in Space,” a jab at Director Justin Lin who has directed most of the Fast & Furious films coupled with the nature of the teaser that focussed on things going fast and blowing up whilst the Beastie Boys, “Sabotage” played throughout.
The backlash was so great that co-writer and star Simon Pegg, himself a dyed-in-the world hardcore Trekkie, responded to the criticism, some of which was coming from Star Trek alumni like, George Takei and Wil Wheaton.
I saw the weirdest trailer today. It was for a generic science fiction action movie, but it was all dressed up in Star Trek costumes.

Harsh words from Wesley there for sure.
Pegg had this to say:
“It was very action-packed,” Pegg told Hey U Guys (via /Film). “It was surprising. I find it to be kind of the marketing people saying, ‘Everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun,’ when there’s a lot more to it than that. I didn’t love it because I know there’s a lot more to the film,” he explained. “There’s a lot more story and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more what I would call Star Trek stuff. But you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in. They’ve got to bang the drum. To the Star Trek fans, I’d say be patient.”
All this is long in the past and finally the new trailer is here and shows a clear improvement over the original. The whizzing and banging is of course still in full effect, and did I just see the Enterprise being destroyed…..again? Surely not! But we also get a sense that there is more to the film than just mindless generic summer blockbuster action although it seems to be sparing no chance to throw the crew and ship in to perilous situations.
We also get a peek at Idris Elba, heavily laden in prosthetics, playing the ominous main villain of the piece, Krall
And a better look also at Sofia Boutella, that from what I can gather is playing an alien with some pretty sweet martial arts moves. Fans of the Kingsman: The Secret Service will remember her as that ever so charming psychopathic legless assassin. I look forward to seeing what she brings in this film.
With Simon Pegg writing and a far more intriguing second trailer with only a scant few months until release maybe there is reason to get the hype train rolling a little faster and more furious for this one.
