Augustus Sherman was a registrar clerk at Ellis Island between 1892-1925 and was also a keen amatuer photographer. His position and his hobby enabled him to document countless immigrants coming into the country and show off the vast diversity that helped continue to settle and build The United States of America after often perilous and long journeys from Europe.
Taken over a 30 year period they show a history that many people don’t acknowledge or pay attention to. It’s hard not to think about these journeys and diverse lives in search for a better future when viewing these striking images.
